By the Gazette of India notification of the Ministry of Human Resource Development dated September 1,1994, the Central Government declared September 1,1994, as the date on which the Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act 1994 ( 35 of 1994) came into force and IIT Guwahati was established. The Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act 1994, passed by the Parliament, was notified in the Gazette of India on May 26, 1994, by which the IIT Guwahati Assam Society was made into IIT Guwahati.
